Freak SpeaK; New Demo! 10/15/2010

Holy crap! What a crazy month for KD... 3 shows in 3 weeks, and we recorded a 3 song demo during that time. And it's not over yet! KD is super excited to be playing George's on November 5th.

The demo was fun to do. We decided to do a "live" demo to try to capture our musics energy and not have it too refined and stuffy... I think it came out great and we are getting some
Awesome response from it. Doug put together some quick videos for the songs so you can check them
Out on YouTube, and we have one up on the video page of this site too.

We chose to record "Undone", "Far Away", and "Goodbye". We thought these songs would give a good idea of our sound. It really was a good time
In the studio. I had fun watching everybody's personalities come out thru their music and thru the mixing process. We all have our individual concerns and desires in what we wanted the demo to be. It was great to see 5 different points of view blend, and unite, into one focused direction.

Thanks again for all the support you have given KD! We hope to see you on November 5th. It's going to be a good freakin' time!

FreaK SpeaK: Love, Hate, Fear, and Rapture. 10/01/2010

Being in a band can be a gigantic pain in the ass!! 5 musicians, all with different ideas, goals, perspectives, financial situations, egos and ideas.. Oh, and don't forget that not only do you have the 5 in the band, but the you have their wives, fiance's, girlfriends, and whoever the single guys are chasing down, and everybody has an opinion.

So why do we do it? How do we do it?

Well, I'm not gonna talk for the others, but I'll give my thoughts on this most interesting situation of love, hate, fear, and rapture..

Trust me, on more than one occasion, I've wanted to pack it in and get the hell away! Why, you ask? Many different reasons. Some valid and some just plain stupid and trivial. To be in a rock band to have to be half crazy. And I feel, to be the singer, or the drummer, you have to also be half foolish! (it's ALWAYS the drummers fault! Even if he's not in the room!! And singer is just plain crazy).

Try keeping 5 guys focused on the same thing
_ without one of us getting distracted by something shiny.. And there is a lot of shiny things in a studio. Cymbals, guitar strings, all the cool little lights coming from the amps, beer bottles... They are all shiny.

So what keeps us together? I think Doug and JD have been playing music together since they were in diapers! They found a way to not only enjoy, but also to keep playing together fun and exciting. Honestly, it's those two that have had to talk me in from the ledge a few times (remember, singer = crazy). So, when you can get 5 guys, 5 FRIENDS, focused on a common goal. The outcome is amazing.. When you find the right group, knowing that you also have the support of their wives, fiance's, and girlfriends, you feel unstoppable...

One of my favorite things to be a part of is, after a show, Doug will walk up to me, shake my hand, and say, "good show, man". That's why I do it. For the other 4 guys. For the music we play and for the friendships we made. To be a part of something that none of us could do alone.

Yep, playing in a band can be a gigantic pain in the ass. A pain I'm proud to be a part of.

FreaK SpeaK; Game day and the mysterious Damon... 09/24/2010

Show day! Or as I like to call it, Game Day!! ToKnight we play the 4th Street Tavern in lovely San Rafael, California. What do I do on show day you ask? Well, right now its almost 8:30 am and I'm sitting in front of my computer with a 34oz bubba keg full of ice and Diet wild cherry pepsi. I'm gonna pay some bills online, scan a few porn sites (kidding mom), check out what's going on in the world, and then post the show on my facebook page. (I was just interrupted by my neighbor because she needed "duck" tape for a broken window and wanted to tell me about her "roof rats". Lovely).
So, now I will get my running gear on and go out for a 5 mile run. Then back home to play with the dogs and shower up. I still have to figure out what I'm wearing toKnight. Maybe Ill go buy a caltrans jumpsuit. After all that is done, Ill head to J.D's shop to get my lettuce trimmed and hang out for a few before we head to the studio and load up gear for toKnight...  Ill let the butterflies in my stomach start to dance around 6pm.. I wonder If Damon will be quiet before the show? Such an amazing player, It's interesting to see his intensity before he even picks up a guitar. What's going thru his mind? The show? What he wants to play? Whatever it is, it keeps him deep in thought..
A brief look into game day... Next weeks pre game will be a little different since we will be playing Andy's market benefit show. (the benefit is or schools not for the market). Come join us for a good freaking time!!! See you all later!

So, KD is in the process of writing 2 new songs, and like the freak I am, I'm trying to write lyrics for both at the same time.. Not usually the best idea, but what the hell, all in the name of rock and roll. As of now, one is called "beautiful", and the other is called "goodbye" aka "the hand thing". The song has nothing to do with hands, it's just my obsession with Shaye St.John. Doug showed me "the hand thing" video on YouTube, and now I'm addicted.

Writing lyrics for two songs at the same time, that are fairly different, can get confusing. Going from, "thank you for showing something beautiful when I couldn't stand what the mirror showed" to,  "you're too much, it's too late, goodbye", can lead to episodes of schizophrenia!!

Last knight we had band practice. It went well. There were some technical issues, but everything worked out. As the 5 of us get to know each other better, and keep practicing together, the personality of the band is starting to come out. We are such an eclectic group of guys. It's cool to see how we can all be
so freaking different and still be so tight, and feel so close, when it comes to the music we play together. True friendship. "Pals" (yes, that is an obscure "young guns" movie quote). We do have something special in KD!

Thanks for reading! Perhaps next week I'll chat about my anxiety before I go on stage...

Anything you want to know? Send an email..

Intro: Freak Speak/Photo shoot. 09/06/2010

Blog
Monday, September 6, 2010
Hello all. It’s me, the FreaK, also known as the singer in the band KNIGHT DRIVE. I’m going to be blogging about my various experiences and thoughts as the freak in KD. The things I post may not necessarily be the thoughts of all the members in KD. These are just MY rants, views, thoughts etc. Most all of what I blog about will be the process of writing songs, lyrics I’m thinking of, what happens at shows, behind the scenes stuff and more. If anyone has any questions, or wants to contact any of us, Please feel free to drop us an email, KnightDriveBand@gmail.com.
PHOTO SHOOT... So the band got together on Friday Knight (get used to seeing the “K” every time we can use it) to have a photo shoot. Since I’ve been in the band, we have never had one. The only Photo we had was taken By Dave Clark after a show. Great shot, but it had Chris in the shot (our previous bass player, and good guy), so we couldn’t use it anymore. Dave was willing to help us out again, and met us at the studio to get some shots in.     Dave is an amazing photographer and good friend of the band, so it felt good having him there. This was the first photo shoot I’ve ever done sober. So there are no crazy pictures or crazy stories. I did miss the craziness of an insane photo shoot. Not that one needs to be pickled to get insane, but man, is it fun... So the photo shoot went smooth. I think we all had a good time, I spent most of it laughing and trying to get the guys to stand closer together.  We are waiting now to see the pics, otherwise I would include some in this post.
So, thats a brief glimpse into the photo shoot... I will blog later this week about a couple of songs we are working on that I’m writing lyrics for. I’m sure Ill have some rant about not playing guitar, or knowing the songs on guitar to make my freakin’ lyric writing easier and better (perhaps the rant has begun)!!!
That's all for now
